Join us for the 2025 LuceSEA Environmental Transitions Field School in Chiang Mai, Thailand! May 26 - June 25, 2025
We seek 8 CMU graduate students from across the social sciences and humanities (or related disciplines) who are interested in critical environmental studies to join the 2025 cohort of Luce Southeast Asia Transitions: Environment, Society, and Change field school. The CMU cohort will join students and faculty from the Department of Geography, University of Hawaii, and a University from Indonesia .
Benefits: The field school will offer graduate students the opportunity to build their academic and professional networks, deepen their ethnographic research experience and skills, participate in collaborative research, and publish a team-based co-authored paper in the journal, Forest & Society. Participants will also receive a LuceSEA Environmental Transitions Field School Completion certificate and a 10,000 Baht stipend.
Themes: The field school focuses on a range of political ecology perspectives. Students will have the option to work on projects focused on feminist traditional ecological knowledge or coffee commodity chains.
Expenses covered: Transportation to and from field sites, workshop & fieldwork expenses, and a 10,000 Baht stipend.
Description of activities & responsibilities
Students will participate in a series of five 90-minute virtual workshops between January and May 2025 with the 2025 cohort, a series of in-person seminars and workshops focused on research design, data analysis, and publication and two weeks of team based field work in two rural communities.
Schedule: May 26 – June 25, 2025
- May 26-31: Research Design Seminars and Workshops at CMU
- June 2-6: 2 night/3 day Group Field Trip in Two Rural Communities and Research Design Workshops at CMU
- June 16-20 & 23-27: Group Fieldwork in Two Rural Communities
- June 23-25: Data Analysis and Publication Workshops at CMU & Symposium
