Department of Geography
The Department of Geography at Chiang Mai University is the first Geography Department in Thailand.It was established in 1964, the same time as the establishment of Chiang Mai University. At the beginning, it offered B.Sc. program in Geography, then in 1981 it offered M.Sc. program in Geography which later (in 2013) changed to M.Sc. program in Geography and Geoinformatics. Over 50 years, the Department has produced many geographers, both undergraduate and graduate levels, to serve the country.
The Department of Geography has a high reputation for its quality in teaching and research in various sub-fields of geography. In 2015, the Department was put as the 1st rank in geography discipline in Thailand by the QS World University Ranking. Currently, the Department has 18 academic staff and 5 administrative and supporting staff. The Department has academic collaborations with other academic institutions, government sectors and private companies within the country. Internationally, the Department has been working with several academic institutions worldwide, including the 2 current Erasmus+ Building Capacity Projects supported by the European Union with the University of Salzburg, Austria, and the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom. In addition, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Centre (Northern Region) or GISTNORTH, in collaboration with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency of Thailand, and the recent Regional Center for Climate and Environmental Studies (RCCES) are also run by the academic staff at the Geography Department.
